Professor Predicts Virginia Will Turn "Red" After Today

(Fairfax, VA) -- The momentum is with Republican Bob McDonnell as Virginians head to the polls to pick a new governor. Political experts are already giving their predictions to the outcome of today's races, which include the offices of lieutenant gvernor and attorney general. Michael McDonald is an associate professor of politics at George Mason University and says by tonight, the Old Dominion will likely be a "red" state once again. McDonald says, quote, "What we're seeing here is consistent in all of the polls a large lead for the Republicans." He believes the down ballot races will be tighter, as voters aren't as familiar with the candidates running for lieutenant governor and attorney general. McDonald says it would be nothing short of a miracle for Democrat Creigh Deeds to pull off the gubernatorial victory. He says over the last couple of weeks, Deeds' campaign has shifted its message more towards focusing on the economy. McDonald says the campaign should have focused on the economy on the outset, instead of focusing so much on attacking the credibility of his opponent. McDonald also believes voter turnout will be moderate at best today. McDonald said, quote, "We'll be lucky if we have a turnout that's a quarter of the 2008 election." McDonald says if the electorate looked more like it did in 2008, the race would have been much closer.
