"Rangel Wins Out In NY Primary For Chance To Run For A 22nd Term"

Democratic Rep. Charles Rangel, the gravelly-voiced New York City congressman whose career has already lasted more than four decades despite the taint of an ethics scandal, overcame demographic changes in his district to win a chance at a 22nd term on Tuesday.

Rangel defeated Adriano Espaillat and three other contenders in New York's congressional primary, his first election since the House of Representatives censured the 82-year-old Korean War veteran in an ethics controversy focused on taxes and financial disclosure statements.

"Violence In Syria Hasn't Slowed, Despite Ceasefire Agreement"

The violence in Syria has matched or exceeded levels from before the April ceasefire agreement, the United Nations said Wednesday, as it suggested that government troops could be behind the killing of more than 100 civilians in the village of Houla last month.

Reflecting the sense of urgency, senior diplomats said world powers would meet Saturday in an attempt to end the bloodshed, with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov being joined by other top diplomats from U.N. Security Council nations and possibly neighbors of Syria.

"John McCain Leads Senate Probe Into National Security Leaks"

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and other Republican senators on Tuesday renewed their call for an independent counsel to investigate recent national security leaks and said Congress may have to investigate the leaks itself if one isn’t appointed.

Thirty-one Republican senators signed a letter circulated by Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and sent to Attorney General Eric Holder urging him to appoint a special counsel.

"Supreme Court Upholding Citizens United Means Corp. $$$ Is Here To Stay"

The Supreme Court’s decision upholding Citizens United in Montana today proved one thing: that corporate money is here to stay.

In a short, anonymous (per curiam) decision, the court effectively ruled 5-4 to invalidate a Montana state law that prohibits corporate spending in connection with candidates and elections, contradicting the Montana Supreme Court’s rejection of a challenge to it.

In doing so, the court upheld its own landmark campaign-finance decision in all 50 states.

Supporters of ousted University of Virginia President Teresa Sullivan called Sunday for her reinstatement and for greater transparency by the school's Board of Visitors.

About 1,500 people gathered for the "Rally for Honor" on the lawn adjacent to the Rotunda on the Charlottesville campus, two days before the school's board is scheduled to meet to reconsider its decision.

In a case of bullying gone too far, a bus monitor from Greece, N.Y., was verbally abused to tears by a group of middle-school aged kids, who recorded the incident and later posted the profanity-filled video on the Internet.

Karen Klein, 68, can be seen taking insults and being ridiculed by the students in a 10-minute video posted on YouTube called “Making the Bus Monitor Cry.

"Boehner: If SCOTUS Strikes Down Health Care Law 'Will Be No Spiking Of The Ball'"

The Supreme Court is expected to rule on the constitutionality of President Barack Obama's health care law within the next week, and House Speaker John Boehner has issued a pre-emptive warning to fellow House Republicans if parts of the law are struck down: Forget about celebrating.

In a memo sent to his entire caucus Friday, Boehner warned members not to gloat over what most Republicans would see as a victory.

"[I]f the Court strikes down all or part of the president's health care law, there will be no spiking of the ball," Boehner wrote in the memo.

"House GOP Say They're Willing To Talk Before Contempt Vote"

House Republican officials say they're willing to negotiate an end to a potential constitutional confrontation in a document dispute, but only if the Obama administration turns over more emails and memos related to the flawed "Fast and Furious" gun-tracking operation.

The dispute got a little nastier Wednesday. A House committee voted to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt, the Obama administration invoked a legal stance that could prevent turning over the documents and the confrontation was elevated to the White House and the top House GOP leadership.

"Hosni Mubarak In A Coma, Off Life Support, After Suffering A Stroke "

Hosni Mubarak was in a coma on Wednesday but off life support and his heart and other vital organs were functioning, according to security officials.

Overnight, state media reported that the 84-year old former president, ousted in last year's uprising and now serving a life sentence in prison, suffered a stroke and was put on life support.  He was transferred to a military hospital from the Cairo prison hospital where he has been kept since his June 2 conviction and sentencing for failing to stop the killing of protesters during the uprising.

A House panel is expected to vote Wednesday to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress after a last-ditch effort to reach a deal over documents related to Operation Fast and Furious appeared to fail.

After a Tuesday evening meeting with Holder and other lawmakers in the Capitol, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) said he was “disappointed” that the attorney general had not come with the documents demanded by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

"Spain's Borrowing Costs Soar In Debt Auction"

Spain paid sharply higher interest rates in a short-term bill auction on Tuesday, highlighting growing investor concerns that the country might eventually need foreign help to finance itself.

The Treasury raised €3.39 billion ($4.28 billion) in 12- and 18-month bills — more than its upper target of €3 billion — and demand was robust, but the cost skyrocketed.

Discussing how the public sector suffers from a lack of competition, Romney told the audience about an optometrist who wanted to change his address and subsequently received 33 pages of paperwork from the federal government, which begat a months-long bureaucratic nightmare during which the optometrist in question wasn't receiving his checks.

Barry Bonds. Guilty on a technicality. At least that's how much of the public sees it. It's all that came out of a seven-year investigation into baseball's home run king.

Lance Armstrong. Not even prosecuted. A two-year, multi-continent investigation brought to a close this year with no charges filed.

Now Roger Clemens. Acquitted on all counts. A five-year investigation ended with the top pitcher of his generation celebrating with family hugs inside the courtroom.

"Rubio Isn't Being Vetted For Vice President Slot"

Even before the Republicans chose a presidential nominee it was widely assumed that Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., would be at the top of anybody’s list of vice presidential candidates. The reasons are obvious: Not only is he young, charismatic and wildly popular with conservatives, but he could also help Republicans win a key state (Florida) and make inroads with Hispanics.

But knowledgeable Republican sources tell me that Rubio is not being vetted by Mitt Romney’s vice presidential search team.

"Egyptians Elect Islamist As President To Take Power This Month"

Egypt's ruling military council pledged Monday to honor its promise to hand over power to the newly elected president by the end of this month, hours after Islamist candidate Mohammed Morsi claimed victory in the first free presidential vote since the ouster of authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak 16 months ago.

Maj-Gen. Mohammed al-Assar, a senior member of the ruling council, said the generals would transfer power in a "grand ceremony," according to the state news agency. He did not give an exact date or mention Morsi by name.

The Obama administration said Tuesday that Russia is sending attack helicopters to Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime and warned that the Arab country's 15-month conflict could become even deadlier.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the U.S. was "concerned about the latest information we have that there are attack helicopters on the way from Russia to Syria."

She said the shipment "will escalate the conflict quite dramatically."

Commerce Secretary John Bryson stepped aside Monday, telling President Barack Obama he will take a medical leave of absence two days after he was involved in two car accidents near Los Angeles.

Bryson, whose spokeswoman said he suffered a seizure, said in a memo released by the Commerce Department that he will “focus all of my attention on resolving the health issues that arose over the weekend.”

Police are investigating two traffic collisions allegedly caused by U.S. Commerce Secretary John Bryson in the Los Angeles area that left him injured and unconscious, authorities said Monday.

Bill Clinton regrets the swirl over comments he made earlier in the week in which he appeared to suggest he would be open to extending the so-called Bush tax cuts for the wealthy, the former president said Thursday.

World stock markets rose Thursday, boosted by hopes that Europe is preparing to take action to tackle the region's financial crisis and that the Federal Reserve will consider additional support for the U.S. economy.

Traders will be closely watching Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke's testimony before a congressional committee Thursday for any hints that the U.S. central bank is considering more monetary stimulus.

"DC Council Chair Kwame Brown Resigned Late Wednesday After Bank Fraud Charges"

The chairman of the District of Columbia Council resigned Wednesday effective immediately after being charged in federal court with lying about his income on bank loan applications.

The bank fraud charge against Kwame R. Brown, one of the most influential power brokers in the D.C. government, is the latest allegation of criminal wrongdoing to roil local politics in the nation's capital. It means further shakeup on the council.

"Senate Intelligence Committee Warns Of Impending Cyber Attacks"

The Democratic chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday expressed worry that leaks to press about a cyber attack on Iran authorized by the Obama administration could lead to a counter-attack on the U.S.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) joined other senior Senate Democrats in expressing serious concerns about the leak, which detailed a cyber attack intended to harm Iran’s nuclear program. Some Republicans argue the information was leaked to help President Obama’s re-election campaign.

"Wisconsin GOP Governor Keeps His Job"

Gov. Scott Walker, fresh from becoming the nation's first governor ever to survive a recall election, wants to go about mending Wisconsin's political divide in an egalitarian way: over brats and beers.

Walker defeated Democratic Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett on Tuesday for the second time in year and a half, turning back a recall effort that began with the collection of more than 900,000 signatures seeking his ouster. It was only the third gubernatorial recall in U.S. history.

"Clinton Shifts Gears: Extend All Tax Cuts Temporarily"

Former President Bill Clinton said Tuesday that broad tax cuts that expire in January should be temporarily renewed, including for the wealthiest Americans, to give lawmakers time to reach a deal on a longer-term extension that should exclude the rich.

Clinton's comments were in contrast to President Barack Obama, whose re-election he is supporting. Obama has opposed renewing the tax reductions for people earning over $250,000 a year, saying they must contribute to the effort to control rampant federal deficits.

Partisan differences now divide Americans more sharply than distinctions of race, religion, education or sex as a decade-long wave has pushed Democrats and Republicans to opposite corners on a wide range of formerly less partisan issues.

On matters as disparate as environmental protection, support for the social safety net and immigration, former areas of bipartisan agreement have dissolved as Democrats have moved left and Republicans have shifted to the right, according to a major new study by the Pew Research Center, which has tracked American values over the last 25 years.

Following a brief but bruising campaign, both sides of the recall election targeting Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker are prepared for a razor-thin margin Tuesday as the Republican tries to become the first U.S. governor to successfully fend off a recall effort.

The vote will bring to a conclusion more than a year of turmoil in Wisconsin after Walker pushed through a bill stripping workers of collective bargaining rights in an effort to fix a hole in the state budget.

"Richard Dawson, Host Of 'Family Feud,' Has Died At 79"

Richard Dawson known best for hosting the “Family Feud” and starring in “Hogan’s Heroes” has died, ABC News has confirmed.

He was 79.  He died Saturday due to complications from cancer. Dawson was born Colin Lionel Emm in Gosport, Hampshire England on Nov. 30, 1932.

"Eric Holder Clashes With Florida Gov. Over Voter ID"

On Friday, Attorney General Eric Holder and the U.S. Justice Department demanded that the State of Florida -- considered a vital electoral state -- to stop checking voter records in that state's probe of illegal voter registrations. Meanwhile, in a letter to a top state official, T. Christian Herren Jr. of the Justice Department's Voting Section, said "the effort appeared to violate the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which protects minorities."

George Zimmerman's attorney says he expects to file a motion Monday seeking a new bond hearing for Trayvon Martin's shooter, who surrendered to authorities in central Florida after a judge revoked his bond.

Wearing a button-down checkered shirt, blue jeans and sneakers, a handcuffed Zimmerman was escorted by two deputy sheriffs from a white minivan into the Seminole County jail Sunday afternoon.

"Edwards Takes Responsibility For His 'Sins' "

A North Carolina jury found former Sen. John Edwards not guilty today on one of six counts in a campaign-finance trial, and declared itself hopelessly deadlocked on the remaining charges, leading the judge to declare a mistrial on those counts.

Edwards, a two-time presidential candidate, accused of soliciting nearly $1 million from wealthy backers to finance a cover up of his illicit affair and illegitimate child during his 2008 bid for the White House, was found not guilty on count 3 of the six-part indictment.
