Arena Stage presents Quality of Life written by Emmy Award-winner Jane Anderson and directed by Lisa Peterson. In this “magnetic work of theater” (San Francisco Chronicle) filled with compassion, honesty and humor, we find two couples who are dealing with devastating personal tragedies. The couples meet one weekend in an attempt to forge a friendship out of distant familial bonds. The two couples, with widely different political and religious backgrounds, join together to confront their physical and emotional challenges as they deal with loss and survival. A marionette adaptation of Humperdink’s children’s opera, full of magic and dazzling special effects. The puppets were created by veteran puppetmaster Allan Stevens, the lights, music and effects, are all operated by Christopher Piper, who also performs all the live vocal characterizations, including a singing Gretel. The production has long been a favorite of children and their parents and is an excellent introduction to musical story for children. “Hansel & Gretel” will be performed September 18-October 11, 2009, with performances Fridays 10:00 and 11:30am and Saturdays and Sundays at 11:30am and 1:00pm. It is recommended for K- Grade 6 and runs 40 minutes. Tickets are $10.00, with group rates available.On Sunday, September 11, 2009 the 1:00 pm performance will be American Sign Language interpreted. Pleasing palates, tantalizing taste buds and satisfying stomachs since 1990, Taste of Bethesda is celebrating its 20th anniversary on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009 from 11am-4pm. Produced by the Bethesda Urban Partnership, Taste of Bethesda will feature over 50 of downtown Bethesda’s renowned restaurants, four stages of live entertainment and a special activity area for children. Taste of Bethesda is located on Fairmont, Norfolk, St. Elmo, Cordell and Del Ray Avenues in the heart of Bethesda’s Woodmont Triangle. Four stages showcase musical and cultural performances, and a children’s area featuring activities, balloons and giveaways that will provide additional entertainment for young visitors. Buddy has also taught adult education courses in mushroom foraging at Chautauqua Institution and Arlington County Adult Education, and has presented mushroom and plant workshops at a number of regional events. The puppets were created by veteran puppetmaster Allan Stevens, the lights, music and effects, are all operated by Christopher Piper, who also performs all the live vocal characterizations, including a singing Gretel. The production has long been a favorite of children and their parents and is an excellent introduction to musical story for children. “Hansel & Gretel” will be performed September 18-October 11, 2009, with performances Fridays 10:00 and 11:30am and Saturdays and Sundays at 11:30am and 1:00pm. Volunteers Needed - Phoenix Rising Meal Program (Volunteering)

Franconia United Methodist Church ("where there are no strangers") is part of a group of churches that serves a nutritious bagged meal every week to homeless people living in the woods, their vehicles, and in motels along the Route One corridor between North Kings Highway and the Fairfax County Parkway in Alexandria. All ages can help prepare sandwiches, assemble the bag lunches, write personal messages of encouragement to place in the bags, and assist in delivery. Franconia United Methodist Church ("where there are no strangers") is part of a group of churches that serves a nutritious bagged meal every week to homeless people living in the woods, their vehicles, and in motels along the Route One corridor between North Kings Highway and the Fairfax County Parkway in Alexandria. All ages can help prepare sandwiches, assemble the bag lunches, write personal messages of encouragement to place in the bags, and assist in delivery.
