Bethesda Painting Awards - Call for Artists (Arts and Music)
Location: Bethesda, MD
The Bethesda Painting Awards will award up to $14,000 to four selected painters. the first place winner will receive $10,000; second place, $2,000; third place, $1,000. A "young" artist whose birth date is after February 26, 1980 may also be awarded $1,000. The Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District invites eligible artists to enter the Bethesda Painting Awards. The selected artwork will be on exhibit in June 2010 in downtown Bethesda, MD at the Fraser Gallery.Artists must be 18+ and permanent, full-time residents of MD, VA or D.C.All original 2-D painting will be accepted. Teach a child to dream. Become a tutor. Volunteer with For Love of Children as a one-on-one tutor with a child in reading and math. No experience necessary. Training is provided. Afternoons, evenings, and Saturdays are available. In just 2 ½ hours a week, you can impact a child’s education. You can also refer a child to our educational programs for middle school and high school students. Co-written with Tony Award-winning author Rachel Sheinkin (The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee) and performed by pop-rock band GrooveLily, Striking 12 is a witty journey through the ups and downs of the holiday season. The secular story follows a “Grumpy Guy” who makes all attempts to avoid the hectic, loveless world on New Year’s Eve, until he is visited by an incandescent salesgirl who promises to ease away his winter doldrums. Full of parody and humor and through their genre-bending style of rock, folk, jazz and pop music, Striking 12 is truly a one-of-a-kind holiday show. Musicians turned actors Valerie Vigoda (electric violinist and D.C.-area native), Brendan Milburn (pianist) and Gene Lewin (drummer) serve as both accompaniment and performers for this amusing score that is “alive with wit and humor” (The New York Times).

It is recommended for K-Adult and runs 50 minutes. Tickets are $10.00 with group rates available.On Sunday, December 20, 2009, the 1:00pm performance will be American Sign Language interpreted. The secular story follows a “Grumpy Guy” who makes all attempts to avoid the hectic, loveless world on New Year’s Eve, until he is visited by an incandescent salesgirl who promises to ease away his winter doldrums. Full of parody and humor and through their genre-bending style of rock, folk, jazz and pop music, Striking 12 is truly a one-of-a-kind holiday show. Musicians turned actors Valerie Vigoda (electric violinist and D.C.-area native), Brendan Milburn (pianist) and Gene Lewin (drummer) serve as both accompaniment and performers for this amusing score that is “alive with wit and humor” (The New York Times).

Christmas at the Manor (Church/Community)

The Church of Christ at Manor Woods invites the community to their fourth production of Christmas at the Manor, a festive program of music and dining, with three presentations: a Dessert Matinée at 3:00 PM on Saturday, December 12, and Dinner Performances at 6:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday, December 12 and 13. All three performances will feature the church’s 40-voice Choir, Orchestra, and Handbell Choir in a concert of classic Christmas favorites as well as newer renditions.In addition to the excellent musical program, a buffet of Christmas sweets and treats will be offered at the Matinée performance, and a three-course dinner of savory beef tenderloin will be served at the two evening performances. The Nutcracker is the story of Clara-Marie’s favorite toy and their adventures together in the land of the Sugarplum Fairy. Music from Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet blends with marionettes and costumed characters to create this unique production.“The Nutcracker” will be performed November 27, 2009- December 31,2009 with performances Thursdays and Fridays at 10:00 and 11:30am, and Saturdays and Sundays at 11:30am and 1:00pm. The Nutcracker is the story of Clara-Marie’s favorite toy and their adventures together in the land of the Sugarplum Fairy. Music from Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet blends with marionettes and costumed characters to create this unique production.“The Nutcracker” will be performed November 27, 2009- December 31,2009 with performances Thursdays and Fridays at 10:00 and 11:30am, and Saturdays and Sundays at 11:30am and 1:00pm.
